Why Use a Juicer

Because bottled or canned juices are sometimes made with added sugar or corn syrup and other undesirable chemicals. They are pasteurized, which is a process that uses heat. Heating them ends up destroying many of their nutrients. Then sitting on store shelves for sometimes months at a time ends up destroying the rest.

Fresh juiced fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, are brimming with vitamins, minerals and natural enzymes and green leafy vegetables are filled with chlorophyll. They still have their life force and they even taste better too.

Different Types of Jucers
Which One is Right for You?

There are a few different kinds of juicers – centrifugal, masticating and triturating (twin gear). The price ranges are quite wide so you may want to evaluate just what you'd like to accomplish before you make a choice of which one would fit into your lifestyle.

Centrifugal

If you're starting out and just want to juice some fruits and vegetables and don't want to spend oodles of money, then the CENTRIFUGAL type can work for you.

Centrifugal juicers have been used for decades. They work by first shredding the fruits and vegetables then pushing the extracted juice through a strainer by spinning at very high speeds. They're good for carrots, apples, celery, beets and any hard fruits or veges. They don't break down green leafy vegetables very well though.

Because of the higher rpm’s, more oxygen is integrated in the juice. This oxidation destroys some of the it’s nutrients and enzymes, which in turn reduces their shelf life. In this case it’s important to drink right away. These juicers are the most reasonably priced , but if you’re thinking of juicing lots of leafy greens, you may want to consider one with a slower speed such as a masticating or triturating juicer.

I used an OMEGA centrifugal juicer (like the one pictured left) for about ten years and was perfectly fine with it, but when I got more serious and wanted to juice wheat grass and sprouts, it was time to splurge.

The Breville Juicer is another well known and liked juicer. It has great reviews. Many people like its modern look and the fact that it doesn't take up a lot of room on your kitchen counter top. They say it's easy to set up, simple to use and easy to disassemble for quick clean up. It's solid and well-built and has 5 speeds to accommodate different fruits and vegetables.

Masticating -Single Gear/Single Auger

Masticating juicers function at slower speeds, producing less heat and foam, which means more nutrients and enzymes are left in the juice. They use a single gear or auger that actually chews the fruit and vegetable fibers and breaks up their cells resulting in juice with more fiber, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. They’re also able to extract juice from practically any fruit and vegetable, as well as wheat grass, and leafy greens like spinach, kale and chard, etc. (except for the Champion juicer which does not juice leafy greens very well). They also are able to extract more juice from the same amount of food. Masticating juicers are more versatile than the centrifugal kind since they also homogenize foods to make sauces, nut butters, banana ice creams, fruit sorbets and baby foods.

This is another Breville Juicer - Model #J8006 Nutrition Center Single-Gear Commercial Masticating Juicer It also has excellent reviews. Rated almost 5 stars because of its "efficiency, ease of use and quality of materials. The newly designed auger is a translucent black material that GE calls ULTEM." Another review said "We researched most of the juicers on the market, and our research pointed us to the Omega 8006". Yet, another "This product is amazing"

Twin Gear/Triturating

Twin gear (triturating) juicers are the most expensive, but they are the most versatile and offer the most benefits. They use two interlocking gears to squeeze and press fruits and vegetables, wheatgrass, leafy greens and sprouts. They turn at even slower speeds than both the centrifugal and single auger models resulting in a more nutrient dense juice with most of its vitamins, minerals and enzymes intact. The juices can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48-72 hours staying fresh and losing only a minimum of its vitamin and other nutrients content.

The Green Power Juicer Twin Gear KPE-1304 is one of the most highly regarded juicing machines on the market. This is the juicer that I have enjoyed for about the past 8 years. I know when I use it I am ingesting the most healthy enzyme rich juices I possibly can. Look on most websites on the internet and you will see them mentioned.

This is same model The Green Power Juicer Twin Gear KPE-1304 but in black. I don't think they had this color when I purchased mine, but I really love it's look. These are the juicers that I highly recommend from either experience or lots of research.

Of course, there are many juicers on the market - some less expensive but that do not perform as well or are not as sturdy as others, some that leave too much pulp in the juice, and some that have very short warranties.

Sometimes spending more is worth it in the long run.
