Why would anyone need a Liver-Gallbladder Cleanse?

Your liver performs over 300 different functions including creating enzymes to digest fats, creates immune system chemicals such as gamma globulin, controls the amount of estrogen circulating through the blood and checks the blood for toxic substances that it then neutralizes. It is one of the body's most important filters. Approximately 75% of detoxification takes place in the liver. It breaks down toxins into less harmful substances that are eventually eliminated from the body.

It is located on your right side just under the ribs and is the body's major detox organ. It produces bile that is stored in the gallbladder and then used in the cleansing and filtering process. When there’s a need for the bile, it flushes everything out into the large intestine to be removed by the body.

You need to have a smoothly flowing stream of bile to get all the wastes out of your body efficiently. If your liver is not healthy enough to produce the right amount of bile, you could end up with sediment in your gallbladder that can develop into gallstones. You’ll experience pain and discomfort which can land you in surgery to get your gallbladder removed if you’re not careful!

Or, to avoid it getting to that point, you can go the natural route with liver-gallbladder cleanses and a change in diet and lifestyle. It's usually recommended to do a cleanse at least once a year.


Do You Need a Liver-Gallbladder Cleanse?

For most people, the signs of having an overtaxed liver and gallbladder include being overweight and feeling sluggish from poor circulation.

Other symptoms may include abdominal bloating, intolerance of fatty foods which may show up as nausea or light colored stools, belching, gas, and indigestion.

How to Do A Liver-Gallbladder Cleanse


Just like any filter, the "Liver Filter" needs a good cleansing to get rid of all the gunk that’s built up over the years.

There are a myriad of liver-gallbladder flush protocols all using different ingredients. Some use apple juice, some heavy cream, some use some olive oil and some Epsom salts. Whichever one you choose, it is important to check with your health care professional before you embark on any cleanse.

Dietary Changes to Help Liver Function

  • Stay away from fried and greasy foods. They are hard for your liver to process.

  • Avoid alcohol. It also puts a lot of stress on your liver.

  • Avoid artificial ingredients. Our bodies are taxed by man-made chemicals.

  • Eat artichokes - they contain silymarin which is a powerful liver protectant.

  • Try to minimize or avoid refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, pastries, sugar, cakes and cookies.

  • Add fresh lemon juice to a glass of water and drink first thing in the morning. You can also drink this throughout the day.

  • The green leafy tops of beets are very nourishing for your liver. They can be steamed or added to salad.

  • Cold pressed virgin olive oil is also good.

  • Add these foods or juice them as they are excellent for your liver: wheat grass, carrot, beet, dandelion, parsley, lemon, grapefruit, apple and spinach.

  • There are also a number of herbs and nutrients that you can take to boost the function of the liver's cells.
