Maca Root

Maca root is a radish-like root vegetable in the potato family.

It is grown high in the Andes mountains of Peru at approximately 13,000 feet above sea level which makes it the highest altitude crop in the world.

Indigenous people have used it for thousands of years for energy and vitality. Today, not only is it enjoyed by South Americans, but the herb is popular in North America, Europe and Japan as well.

The root is a highly nutritious food containing essential amino acids, minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, and iron as well as B vitamins, vitamins C & E and glycosides.

One of its most important benefits is as an adaptogen. An adaptogenic herb, also known as a tonic herb, is one that increases the body’s resistance to stress and anxiety and helps the body achieve a balanced state. It can either tone down or boost the body’s systems depending on what it requires to reach homeostasis.

It improves depression, can regulate hormonal imbalances and promotes healthy teeth and bones.

It is also known to:

  • help build muscle
  • prevent osteoporosis
  • is an antioxidant
  • combats impotence, aids in lack of libido
  • helps alleviate PMS
  • combats chronic fatigue
  • helps infertility in humans and animals
  • decreased or completely eliminated thyroid problems
  • Enhances memory, learning, and mental ability
  • Improves and promotes a more youthful skin appearance
  • helps to build muscle

Usually it is available in dried powder form, although it can be purchased as a tincture.

You can mix it with water or juice or add to a smoothie.

It’s a good idea to start with a smaller dosage and work up to about a tablespoon a day.
