The master cleanse also known as the master cleanser or the lemonade diet is one of the most simple and inexpensive ways to cleanse toxins and congestion from your body and lose weight.

It is a juice cleanse that was first introduced by Stanley Burroughs in 1941. Since then literally thousands of people have undertaken this fast regularly.

It helps eliminate fatigue, and a myriad of health problems. It can renew your digestive system, relieve painful joints and muscles, better your circulation, cleanse your kidneys and purify your cells and is effective for all over rejuvenation.

What do you need?

Not a lot. The basic lemonade drink is made with lemons or limes, a good grade maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and purified water.


The Master Cleanse Recipe

  • 2 tablespoons lemon or lime juice, preferably organic (make sure you use fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice (not the stuff that comes in bottles)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (not sugared syrup with maple flavor – read about maple syrups below.
  • 1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper or add to taste
  • Approximately 10 oz. water – medium hot – although you can drink it cold if you prefer ( use purified water)

Mix all the ingredients together and you've got your lemonade concoction.


How Long do You Fast and How Often?

It's suggested you fast for at least 10 days and up to 40 days three to four times a year. Some people with extreme health problems or wanting to lose more weight have done it for longer.


Do You Need Anything Else?

Yes. You'll want to get some salt - not regular table salt that's iodized, but look for either Celtic sea salt or Himalayan sea salt. I prefer the Himalayan, which you can also use for a Himalayan Salt Detox.

This will be used to make the Internal Salt Water Bath that will help the cleansing along. All you need to do is add two level teaspoons of the salt to a quart of lukewarm water.

You'll also need a good laxative herb tea that you can find at your local health food store.


How to Do the Master Cleanse

Drink the water and salt mixture first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. It will take about an hour to wash the entire digestive tract and you will most likely need to use the bathroom a few times.

Then during the day, take anywhere from six to twelve glasses of the Lemonade Drink. If you find yourself feeling hungry, drink another glass.

You can lessen the amount of maple syrup if you're trying to lose weight, but always use the same amount of lemon or lime juice.

If you like, you can drink some plain water during the day.

Take a cup of the laxative tea in the evening.

Do not eat anything and don't take vitamins. Of course, if you are on medication, keep taking it.

Are You Getting All You Need Nutritionally?

According to Stanley Burroughs, YES. The combination of the lemon and maple syrup supply potassium, carbon, hydrogen, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, iron, chlorine and silicon, sulfur plus a myriad of vitamins.

What happens on this detox is the lemonade mixture pulls the toxins out of your cells and organs, then the salt water bath and laxative tea rid the body of them before they are reabsorbed. This will strengthen the body and help it heal.


What to Expect While on the Master Cleanse.

Some people may get dizzy or nauseous, some may have muscles aches and pains and some may feel just plain lousy. Don't worry, this is what's called a healing crisis and it will go away usually in a day or two. It's all the toxins being removed from your tissues and entering your bloodstream to be eliminated by your body.

Don't let this deter you. Just try to take it easy until these feelings pass and drink more water.

You'll be glad you followed through.




Breaking the Master Cleanse Fast

After not eating solid foods for some time, you don't want to shock your digestive system, so it's really important to follow the break fast directions carefully.

The following plan is for someone, who prior to the fast ate a pretty healthy diet. (lots of raw fruits and vegetables, no meat)

  • FIRST AND SECOND DAY AFTER FAST:

    Drink several 8 oz. glasses of fresh squeezed orange juice throughout the day, as you like. Sip it slowly. If you have any digestive problems during this time, add some water to the juice.

  • THIRD DAY:

    Drink fresh orange juice in the morning. For lunch, eat raw fruit.Have some more raw fruit or a fresh salad for dinner.

  • FOURTH DAY:

    You are now ready to resume your diet. Aim to eat mostly raw fruits and vegetables and pre-soaked seeds and nuts.

If you are a person who has eaten meat and dairy or lots of cooked foods, it's best to do the following to break your fast.

  • FIRST DAY:

    Drink several 8 oz. glasses of freshly squeezed orange juice throughout the day, as desired. Sip it slowly.

  • SECOND DAY:

    Drink several 8 oz. glasses of the orange juice in the morning.Again, sip slowly. In the afternoon prepare the following fresh soup. Do not used canned soups. They are filled with lots of salts and sometimes preservatives, which would defeat the whole purpose. Have this soup for dinner using mostly the broth. You can add some of the vegetables it you so desire.

    VEGETABLE SOUP
    Cook some vegetables of your choice. Some ideas are carrots, celery, parsley, potatoes, onions, tomatoes or zucchini. If you like, you can add brown rice and legumes. Do not add chicken or meat or the stock from either. Add spices for flavor. You may prepare enough today and tomorrow's meal.

  • THIRD DAY:

    Drink orange juice in the morning. At Noon have some more of the vegetable soup. Dinner time you can eat fruit, vegetables or a salad.

  • FOURTH DAY:

    You may resume eating normally. If you find after starting to eat again, you experience gas or some other digestive stress, continue the lemonade diet for a few more days until your body is ready for food.




Congratulations! You've Completed the Master Cleanse - Now What?

Stanley Burroughs, "The Master Cleanser" suggests that you continue with the lemonade in the mornings and stick to a diet consisting of fruits, vegetable, seeds and berries to obtain optimal health.

I would go one step further and tell you to eat as much of these foods in their raw form. A raw food diet includes all the enzymes your body needs to function at its best.
