Scraping Detox is also known as Gua Sha or scrape therapy (“Gua” means to scrape or rub and “Sha” refers to a reddish elevated skin rash (also known as petechiae). This treatment has been used in China for over two thousand years.
Chinese medicine believes that illness and disease is caused by toxins and “stuck” energy. Gua Sha is believed to detoxify and free up this stagnant energy so that “qi” or life energy can move through the body to keep us alive and healthy.
It is usually done by an acupuncturist, but in China it is commonly performed in the home. It is non-intrusive, simple and very effective, many times with immediate benefits, especially when used for pain.

What to expect
Usually the practitioner will apply a massage oil or lotion as a lubricant. Then they will begin scraping your skin, as in the video. Some use buffalo horn tools, other use ceramic soup spoon and I have even hear of an acupuncturist using a jar cap. learned this technique using a ceramic soup spoon. Actually any smooth rounded edge is good. Some Vietnamese communities use a coin.
The treated areas will be covered with tiny, red or purple colored dots. that show up where you actually have stagnate blood and toxins. Their appearance is a good sign as they indicate that these toxins are being released.
If not treated, you can end up with problems not only in your muscles but also in your internal organs.
Does scraping detox hurt?
No. Although the rash left behind looks quite raw, it does not hurt. The redness starts fading right away and totally disappears in a few days.
